Fun fact: while the art of candle making has been around for thousands and thousands of years, soy candles have only been around since 1996. Soy wax was created by a group of students from Purdue University, who were assigned with the task of developing a birthday candle using a renewable resource. They figured out how to solidify soybean wax, and the candle industry suddenly had a new, cleaner option.
Since soy wax is made from soy beans, it is natural and biodegradable. Paraffin candles, which is what most store-bought candles are made out of, are made from petroleum, which contains carcinogenic substances that are released into the air when burned. Yuck! So not only are soy candles better for the environment, they're better for your health, too.
An added bonus to soy candles is that they have a cooler burning temperature and slower burning time, so they typically last longer than a paraffin candle of the same size.
